Prescription Only Medicines (POM)

In Ireland, there are a range of schemes in place to assist people with the cost of their medication. Pharmacist can advise you on how these schemes work and you can read more about them here, and also find out how to apply.

MEDICAL CARD SCHEME

Provides a range of medications and other products free of charge to people below a certain income, or with other eligibility.

Prescription charges are currently €2.00 per item maximum €20.00 per family per month. For over 70 years the charges are €1.50 per item or maximum €15.00 per family per month.

DRUG PAYMENT SCHEME

Prescription costs over €124 per month, per family are paid for by the HSE through this scheme.

Private prescriptions are processed under this scheme when the amount exceeds €124.00 per family per month.

Under the Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS) an individual or family will pay no more than €124 each calendar month for:

approved prescribed drugs and medicines

rental costs for a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine

rental costs for oxygen

If you don’t have a medical card and you pay more than €124 a month for any of these, you should apply. Click link below

Applying if you have children in full-time education

If you are applying as a family, you may have dependent children aged 18 to 23 in full-time education. If so, you may want to add them to your card.

To do this:

  • Complete section 2 of the Drug Payment Scheme Application Form

  • Have it signed and stamped by the educational institute

  • Include it in your application

Emergency Drug Payment Scheme Application

Your pharmacist can do this for you if you need to buy expensive medication but have not yet registered for the DPS scheme. This Emergency registration on lasts 3 months once processed so you still need to follow up with the HSE on you application.

If this expires you will have to pay the full price for your medicine

Drug Payments Scheme Refund Claim Form

If you have spent €124.00 euro in your pharmacy, and then needed to get a prescription filled in another pharmacy in the same calendar month then you can claim back the excess of €124.00 from the HSE. See the link below to access this form

https://www2.hse.ie/file-library/drugs-payment-scheme/drugs-payment-scheme-refund-form.pdf

Tax refunds

You can claim 20% tax relief on medicines. You can claim though www.revenue.ie

Ask your pharmacist for a medical expenses printout at the end of the year. We can print it or email this report to you.

LONG TERM ILLNESS SCHEME

Provides medication and other aids for people with specific conditions

Under the Long-Term Illness (LTI) Scheme you can get some drugs, medicines and approved appliances for free from your pharmacy.

There is no means test for the scheme.

Diseases and disabilities covered by the scheme

The diseases and disabilities covered by the scheme are:

  • Acute leukaemia

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Cystic fibrosis

  • Diabetes insipidus

  • Diabetes mellitus (does not include Gestational Diabetes)

  • Epilepsy

  • Haemophilia

  • Hydrocephalus

  • Intellectual disability (mental handicap)

  • Mental Illness - under the age of 16 years

  • Muscular dystrophy

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Parkinsonism

  • Phenylketonuria (PKU)

  • Spina bifida

  • Thalidomide conditions

If you have a medical condition that is not listed above, you can apply for a medical card

How you qualify for the Long Term Illness Scheme?

To qualify, you must be 'ordinarily resident’ in the Republic of Ireland. This means that you are living here and intend to live here for at least one year.

Students from outside the EU do not qualify for the LTI Scheme

Long-Term Illness Scheme card

If your application is successful, you will get a Long-Term Illness Scheme card. This card replaces the Long-Term Illness Scheme green book.

Emergency Registration for Long Term Illness Scheme

If you are recently diagnosed with an illness from the above list and are prescribed new medication, your pharmacist can apply for emergency registration for you. However you need to still contact the HSE and follow up on your application within 3 months.

HIGH TECH MEDICINES

High Tech Medicines are, typically, expensive medicines which have been produced by biotechnological means, or contain new drugs with significant new therapeutic uses, or require prescribing by a consultant in a hospital setting.

High tech medicines are processed under the GMS, DPS or LTI schemes

A patient is registered to one pharmacy.

The High Tech Hub is the HSE hub that pharmacists order High Tech Medicines from. The Hub was introduced in March 2018 to streamline administration of the scheme for pharmacists and to provide enhanced visibility of stock management and spending on this scheme to the HSE.
